Nebraska WWII Fatal Crash Site # 14

September 29, 1943

Two pilots in a C-53D (42-68788) transport plane took off from the Alliance Army Air Field to practice communication with the Scottsbluff Radio Range. For an unknown reason the plane struck the ground in an area of the Sandhills a few miles from the air field. Both pilots were killed instantly. Heavy fog inhibited the search from the air, but a local rancher found the wreckage while out on his horse.
