Nebraska WWII Fatal Non-Crash Site # 2
August 23, 1943
Six paratroopers from the 507th Parachute Infantry made a practice jump from a C-47 east of the Alliance AAF. High winds caused them to drift into a nearby lake where three of the paratroopers drowned. The paratroopers had full gear and equipment on when they landed in the water which hampered their efforts to stay above the choppy water.
The area at the time of the accident was known as Smith Lake. Today it is known as Sewer Lake No. 1. When the AAF was in operation the lake was converted to a lagoon. Today it is no longer a lagoon despite the name.
Sewer Lake No. 1 was once known as Smith Lake.
