Nebraska WWII Fatal Crash Site # 35

June 7, 1944

A B-24J (44-40758) from the Lincoln Army Air Field was part of a fifteen plane formation that was headed to the west coast. Near the town of Chappell the plane developed a fire of unknown origin. After circling the town several times the plane exploded in the air scattering the wreckage over a large area. All ten crew members were instantly killed.

Crew Members

The site was visited on May 18, 2007, along with two area residents who were eye-witnesses to the crash. The exact location of the main wreckage was confirmed by finding physical evidence at the site with a metal detector.
