Nebraska WWII Fatal Crash Site # 53Meadow Grove
October 12, 1944A group of six P-47's from the Bruning Army Air Field were doing practice strafing at the Norfolk Gunnery Range near Meadow Grove. One P-47D (42-28763) experienced engine trouble and tried to fly to the Norfolk Municipal Airport. He lost altitude and instead tried to land in a pasture. The pilot failed to gain proper control of the aircraft and crashed upon landing. The plane caught fire and a nearby civilian was unable to free him from his harness.
This site was visited on June 9, 2007. After an extensive search, evidence of the exact crash site was found in a pasture with the use of a metal detector.
A slight depression and small bits of wreckage confirmed this location.P-47 Aircraft
