Nebraska WWII Fatal Non-Crash Site # 1

The tailgunner of a B-17 was initially thought to have fallen out of an emergency exit without a parachute. It was later determined that he was distraught over receiving a "Dear John" letter from his girlfriend and had jumped from the plane to his death. His body was found near the Tri-State Irrigation Canal east of Scottsbluff.
